Full Coverage vs. Liability: Which Car Insurance Is Right for You?

“Full coverage” and “liability only” get used constantly, but they are not official policy types, just shorthand. Knowing what each really means helps Utah drivers buy the right protection instead of guessing.

What liability insurance covers

Liability is the coverage Utah requires, and it pays for the other party when you are at fault: their injuries (bodily injury liability) and their property (property damage liability). It does not pay to repair your own vehicle. Utah’s minimums are a legal floor, not a recommendation.

What “full coverage” really means

Full coverage usually means liability plus two coverages that protect your own car:

  • Collision: repairs your vehicle after a crash, no matter who is at fault.
  • Comprehensive: covers non-crash damage like theft, hail, fire, or hitting a deer.

Which is right for you?

  • A newer or financed vehicle usually needs full coverage, and your lender will often require it.
  • An older car with a low value may be fine on liability if you could replace it yourself.
  • Weigh the premium savings against the cost of repairing or replacing your car out of pocket.
