General liability and professional liability sound similar, but they protect against very different risks. Many Utah businesses actually need both. Here is the difference in plain English.

General liability (CGL)

General liability covers third-party bodily injury, property damage, and advertising injury. This is the coverage that responds when a customer slips and falls in your shop or you accidentally damage a client’s property.

Professional liability (E&O)

Professional liability, also called Errors and Omissions, covers claims tied to your professional services and advice, mistakes, oversights, or alleged negligence in the work you do. It is essential for consultants, accountants, agents, and other advice-based businesses.

Which do you need?

If you have a physical location or interact with the public, you likely need general liability. If clients pay you for your expertise, you likely need professional liability too. Plenty of businesses carry both.
